Riviera Winter Wonders
Magic on the French Riviera – VillaHotels Winter Experiences
Nice: Carnival 🎆 (February 13–27, 2026)
Menton: Lemon Festival & Garden of Lights 🍋 (February 11–28, 2026)
In winter, the French Riviera reveals a quieter, more refined side of the Mediterranean. Alongside sunlit promenades and elegant coastal towns, two world-famous events bring the region to life in February: the Nice Carnival and Menton’s Fête du Citron.
For VillaHotels guests, these celebrations are more than just festivals—they are immersive cultural experiences that perfectly complement the Riviera’s understated luxury and relaxed winter rhythm.

Nice Carnival – The Riviera’s Largest Winter Celebration
The Nice Carnival is one of Europe’s oldest and most spectacular carnivals, attracting over 200,000 visitors annually. It blends visual spectacle, satire, music, and Mediterranean joie de vivre.
A brief history: The carnival’s first written mention dates back to 1294, when the Count of Provence organized the “days of carnival joy,” making Nice one of the world’s earliest carnival cities. Originally a pre-Lenten pagan festival—the last indulgence before the fast—the carnival has always celebrated excess, humor, and theatricality. Its golden age came during the Belle Époque, when it was considered the world’s largest carnival.
2026 Highlights:
- 🎭 Grand Daytime Parades: February 13, 20, and 27 at 2:30 PM; approximately 20 elaborate floats, 50 giant figures, and international bands and street performers fill the streets with color and music.
- ✨ Illuminated Night Parades (Corso Illuminé): Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8:30 PM, a magical night parade of lights, music, and movement in the heart of Nice.
- Bataille de Fleurs – Flower Battles: First introduced in 1876 along the Promenade des Anglais, nearly 100,000 flowers are thrown to the crowd each year. Every float is fully handmade with thousands of fresh petals.
- The Carnival King: The festival concludes with the spectacular burning of a massive carnival king statue at Place Masséna, accompanied by fireworks. Tradition holds that the king rises from the ashes the following year to reign again.

Menton Fête du Citron – A Citrus Dream
Following Nice, Menton hosts the French Riviera’s second-largest winter festival: the Fête du Citron, attracting over 230,000 visitors annually and filling the city with the scent of fresh citrus.
Highlights include:
- 🍊 Golden Fruit Parades: Giant citrus sculptures parade through the streets accompanied by musicians, dancers, and performers.
- 🌙 Evening Parades & Fireworks: Illuminated night events culminating in spectacular fireworks over the bay.
- 💡 Garden of Lights at Biovès Gardens: Artistic light and sound installations bring citrus-themed creations to life.
- 🏛 Exhibitions at Palais de l’Europe: Including the Orchid Festival and citrus-inspired products such as jams, perfumes, and artisan soaps.
Citrus as a way of life: In Menton, citrus is more than decoration—it’s a lifestyle. Enjoy citrus jam for breakfast, sip limoncello after dinner, or indulge in lemon ice cream by the sea. Local farmers even export their citrus extracts to Grasse, the world capital of perfume, while chefs like Mauro Colagreco, the three-Michelin-starred chef of Mirazur, cultivate their own nearby lemon groves, adding to the city’s global culinary reputation.

The Nice Carnival and Menton Fête du Citron offer the perfect opportunity to experience the French Riviera at its most cultural and atmospheric—vibrant yet refined, festive yet elegant. For VillaHotels guests, these winter festivals are carefully curated experiences that reflect the Riviera’s timeless charm, artistic spirit, and Mediterranean sophistication.
