Winter Magic on the French Riviera

Carnaval de Nice & Menton’s Fête du Citron – 11 February – 2 March 2025

Winter on the French Riviera reveals a quieter, more refined side of the Mediterranean. In February, sunlit promenades and elegant coastal towns are joined by two world-famous events that alone are worth the journey: the Carnaval de Nice and Menton’s Fête du Citron.

For VillaHotels guests, these celebrations are more than festivals — they are immersive cultural experiences that perfectly complement the Riviera’s understated luxury and relaxed winter rhythm.

Carnaval de Nice – The Riviera’s Greatest Winter Celebration

The Nice Carnival is one of Europe’s largest and oldest carnivals, welcoming over 200,000 visitors each February. It is the French Riviera’s most important winter event, blending spectacle, satire, music, and Mediterranean joie de vivre.

A Brief History

The first written reference to the carnival dates back to 1294, when the Count of Provence organized the “joyful days of carnival,” making Nice one of the earliest carnival cities in the world.

Originally a pagan celebration held before Lent — the final moment of indulgence before fasting — the carnival has always embraced excess, humor, and theatricality. During the Belle Époque, it reached its golden age and was considered the largest carnival in the world.

Carnaval de Nice 2025 – Events & Highlights

2025 Theme: “King of the Oceans” Each year’s theme reflects current events, social commentary, and political satire — always playful, always exaggerated.

Main Events

🎭 Grand Daytime Parade

  • Opening day (Saturday 14, 21, 28 February 2025)  at 2:30 PM
  • Around 20 elaborate floats
  • 50 giant figures, recreated annually
  • International bands and street performers filling the city with color and sound

Bataille de Fleurs – The Flower Battles

One of the carnival’s most iconic traditions, the Bataille de Fleurs, was created in 1876 along the Promenade des Anglais.

  • Nearly 100,000 flowers are thrown to the audience
  • Floats are decorated entirely by hand using thousands of fresh petals
  • Over 80% of the flowers are locally grown

Originally designed to entertain winter visitors and promote local flower growers, the Flower Battles remain one of the most colorful and fragrant events on the Riviera.

The Carnival King – Fire, Music, and Legend

The carnival concludes with one of its most powerful rituals.

  • A towering Carnival King effigy presides over the festivities from Place Masséna
  • On the final night, it is escorted to the Bay of Angels
  • The effigy is set ablaze at sea, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display

According to tradition, the King will rise again from the ashes the following year to reign over the carnival once more.

Menton’s Fête du Citron – A Citrus Dream (15 February- 2 March 2025)

Following Nice, Menton hosts the French Riviera’s second-largest winter event. The Fête du Citron attracts over 230,000 visitors each year and is unlike anything else in the world.

Sculptures Made of Lemons? Absolutely.

  • 140 tons of lemons and oranges
  • Around 10 monumental sculptures, some reaching 9 meters in height
  • Created by more than 400 artisans and designers

The result is surreal and unforgettable — glowing yellow and orange forms, infused with the fresh scent of citrus throughout the town.

What to Experience in Menton

🏛 Exhibitions at the Palais de l’Europe

Menton – Where Citrus Is a Way of Life

In Menton, citrus is more than a festival — it’s a lifestyle.

  • Lemon marmalade at breakfast
  • Limoncello after dinner
  • Lemon gelato enjoyed along the seafront

Local farmers even send lemon essence to Grasse, the world capital of perfumery. The town’s culinary reputation has been elevated globally by Mauro Colagreco, the three-Michelin-star chef of Mirazur, who grows his own citrus trees nearby.

The Carnaval de Nice and the Fête du Citron offer a perfect opportunity to experience the French Riviera at its most cultural and atmospheric — vibrant yet refined, festive yet elegant.

For VillaHotels guests, these winter festivals are not just events on a calendar, but carefully curated experiences that reflect the Riviera’s timeless charm, artistic spirit, and Mediterranean sophistication.
